There is no shortage of ideas in Africa.
Every day, young people are building businesses, developing products, solving problems in their communities and imagining new ways to make life, work and commerce better. What is often missing is not ambition, but access: access to the right knowledge, mentors, networks, resources and opportunities to turn an idea into a business that can survive and scale.
This is where PitchStar comes in.
PitchStar is Startup Kano’s startup incubation and pre-incubation programme designed to help early-stage founders move from ideas and early concepts to stronger, more structured and investment-ready businesses. Since four years ago, the programme provides founders with practical training, mentorship, business development support and opportunities to pitch their ventures to investors, partners and other ecosystem players.
But PitchStar was never meant to be just another entrepreneurship programme.
It was built around a simple belief: Africa does not need to wait for the next generation of businesses to come from somewhere else. We can build them here, start locally, conquer ocall markets and go global.
From Ideas to Businesses
For early-stage founders, the journey from an idea to a viable startup can be overwhelming. There are questions about the customer, the business model, pricing, marketing, finances, product development, team building and, eventually, how to communicate the value of the business to investors and customers.
PitchStar breaks that journey down.
Through the incubation process, founders work through areas including business model development, market research, financial literacy, branding and storytelling, product development and pitch preparation. They receive mentorship and expert guidance while developing and validating their businesses, culminating in a Demo Day where they can present their ventures to investors, ecosystem partners and industry experts.
The result is not simply a founder who knows how to pitch.
It is a founder who understands their business better and ready for the next step.
A Growing Community of Founders
Over the years, PitchStar has brought together over 60 founders building solutions across different sectors and responding to challenges within and beyond Northern Nigeria.
Its 40+ member alumni include businesses such as Zainnest, Schoola, Northino, The Meraki, Daily Invoice, Maeish Ecocycle, Sal’s Epiphany Studio and many more.
That is the real impact of incubation: not simply producing graduates, but helping founders become better equipped to build solid business ideas and products.
Building More Than Startups
PitchStar’s impact also sits within a larger story about Northern Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.
Kano has increasingly emerged as an important startup city, with Startup Kano playing a significant role in creating entry points for young people into technology and entrepreneurship. By 2024, Startup Kano had supported access to the tech ecosystem for more than 50,000 young people and helped early-stage entrepreneurs raise over a $1 million for tech-enabled businesses.
PitchStar contributes to that wider movement by creating a pipeline of founders who are not only building businesses, but building solutions relevant to the realities of their communities.
From fintech and health-tech to education, clean technology, logistics and media, the programme is intentionally open to founders solving problems across sectors. This matters because innovation in Africa will not have one face.
The next chapter of PitchStar is about taking what has worked and making it accessible to even more founders.
Following its journey in Kano, PitchStar is preparing to expand into five other states across Northern Nigeria.
The ambition is clear: to build a stronger, more connected African startup ecosystem where founders can access the support they need without having to leave their communities to find it.
Because the next African startup unicorn could come from anywhere, and we want to be there when it does.
