LAST WEEK WE HOSTED TWO TECH COMMUNITIES

We hosted two tech communities in Kano, Code Pyramid and Google Developers Group Northwest University chapter. Code Pyramid is a community of developers, graphics designers, network engineers and tech enthusiasts. They hold a meetup every last Saturday of the month. This month we hosted them at our hub on Saturday 25th March.

GDG Northwest university is also a group of developers powered by Google who a clustered in the university. They held their Cloud Next Extended event in our hub on Sunday the 26th March.

Both events were successful as participants gave positive feedbacks. The highlights of the Code Pyramid were captured in pictures below.

WOMEN FOUNDERS GROUP CELEBRATES 50 INFLUENTIAL NORTHERN WOMEN

The International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day set aside worldwide to celebrate women. Women Founders Group (WFG) arm of Startup Kano celebrated this iconic day by recognizing 50 influential women in northern Nigeria.

WFG lead Miss Aysha Tofa said,”Northern women have always been subject of stereotype and this has led to many of them been unrecognized and unappreciated in the society. We want to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day by recognizing this heroines and patriots in the region”

The women were selected on the basis of merit and cut across all industries and professions. One of the criteria is they must have made positive impact towards the growth and development of their society and their contributions must have immensely affected their community.

Some of the notable women include the former first lady Hajiya Maryam Abacha, Kebbi State first lady Dr. Zainab Bagudu, United Nation Deputy Secretary General Hajiya Amina Muhammad and the President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria Engr. Hauwa Sadique and many other influential women.

The celebration was online through WFG social media handles on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. International Women’s Day is a yearly celebration that will continue to acknowledge the impact of women in the society and in the history of the world.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ONE DAY WORKSHOP HELD AT STARTUP KANO HUB

A one day workshop on proposal writing was held on the 8th March 2017 at Startup Kano Hub. The workshop was organized by the Centre for Enlightenment and Human Development in collaboration with Her Dear Diary Initiative. It was aimed at teaching participants the art of writing proposals.

The event was tailored to engage participants and arm them with firsthand knowledge of how to write a standard fundraising and business partnership proposal. The facilitators were experienced professionals and business consultants who shed more light to their audience on the subject matter.

Women Founders Group lead Miss Aysha Tofa gave a 5 minute speech about the aims and objectives of Startup Kano. The program which lasted for six hours saw an interactive blend between facilitators and audience. The Chief Technical Officer of Startup Kano Mr. Ahmed Idris was also among the facilitators.

The event ended with a group work session and then proceeded by a presentation from each group and then evaluation by the facilitators. It was then followed by a networking session and finally a group picture was taken to officially mark the end of the workshop.

THE LAUNCH OF RESTMEAL, KANO FIRST ON DEMAND FOOD SERVICE

Restmeal is an on demand online food ordering service that was launched at Startup Kano Hub on the 4th March, 2017. The startup was founded by a young female entrepreneur, a graduate of computer science from Bayero University Kano. She initially presented the online food ordering system as her final year project in the university. After graduating she became increasingly passionate about pursuing the business of food delivery.

As part of our incubation program, Restmeal was groomed to accommodate its market need and also add value to the ecosystem. The startup launched first as a web app. Mobile versions for both iOS and Android will be available soon on their respective app stores.

It was a low key launch as participants included only invited relatives of the founder and some Startup Kano staff. The event which started by 4pm was also streamed live on facebook to enable the public and customers to catch up with the happenings. Free delivery was offered on the launch day to those who made orders on the platform.

Ja Muje To hold Round Table Discussion in partnership with Startup Kano

Ja Muje is an evidence based, solution driven initiative aimed at the key factors affecting development in Northern Nigeria. With a focus on citizen led programs, Ja Muje will work on the ground with the most affected states in the region in synergizing efforts to create short term capacity building programs, and long term road maps that will consolidate efforts already in place, and also get the people to shape their communities towards sustainable development.

Among its program is the tweet chat (tweetathon) an innovative use of social media (Twitter) to discuss issues that concerns the region. Ja Muje have held several of this tweet chats which is usually a conversation between relevant parties on minotary problems in the North. We partnered with Jamuje to host a tweetathon with Bayero University students and lecturers on the 15th February 2017. The topic discussed was about education policies in northern Nigeria.

Ja Muje also hosts a quarterly Round-table having two participants each from key affected states based on the sector being addressed. The Round-table discussions brings together stakeholders from all tiers of that sector to present short term, achievable projects with a framework and action plan as to how it can be implemented.

The first edition is to be held in Kano State with participants from some northern states including Sokoto, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kastina, Bauchi, Taraba, Yobe and Borno States. Startup Kano is the official tech partners for the event, we will be curating the tweet chat on that day. The program will identify problems and come up with solutions that will be acted upon immediately.  The round table is strictly by registration. The event is scheduled to hold as follows:
